چکیده

Abstract Background The application of chemical dispersants is a common remediation strategy when accidental oil spills occur in aquatic environments. Breaking down the slick into small droplets, facilitate increase particulate and dissolved compounds, enhancing bioavailability toxic constituents. aim present work was to explore effects water accommodated fractions (WAF) naphthenic North Sea crude produced with without addition dispersant FINASOL OSR 52 adult zebrafish exposed for 3 21 d. Fish were environmentally relevant concentrations 5% 25% WAF OIL (1:200) OIL+D (dispersant–oil ratio 1:10) semi-static exposure setup. Results chemically dispersed presented 20-fold target polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) phase compared corresponding treatment only resulting markedly bioaccumulation PAHs carcass after d control. Furthermore, caused fish mortality. In general, undispersed treatments did not lead significant control, while induced alterations at gene transcription enzyme activity levels. Significant up-regulation biotransformation oxidative stress response genes ( cyp1a , gstp1 sod1 gpx1a ) recorded livers. For same group, increment EROD detected liver along increased GST CAT activities gills. also reduced brain AChE showed potential genotoxic effect as indicated by frequency micronuclei erythrocytes exposure. Conclusions results demonstrate that accentuates compounds it increases PAH diverse on different levels biological organization zebrafish. study emphasizes importance combine multilevel endpoints reliable risk assessment due high variable biomarker responses. impact toxicity can support decision making spill strategies.

Ingestion and sublethal effects of physically and chemically dispersed crude oil on marine planktonic copepods

Planktonic copepods play a key function in marine ecosystems, however, little is known about the effects of dispersants and chemically dispersed crude oil on these important planktonic organisms. We examined the potential for the copepods Acartia tonsa, Temora turbinata and Parvocalanus crassirostris to ingest crude oil droplets and determined the acute toxicity of the dispersant Corexit(®) 950...

Enhanced immunological and detoxification responses in Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, exposed to chemically dispersed oil.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of chemically dispersed oil on an economically and ecologically important species inhabiting coasts and estuaries, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Studies were carried out with juveniles, known to generally be more sensitive to environmental stress than adults. A set of enzyme activities involved in immune defence mechanisms and detoxifica...

Photoenhanced toxicity of aqueous phase and chemically dispersed weathered Alaska North Slope crude oil to Pacific herring eggs and larvae.

The photoenhanced toxicity of weathered Alaska North Slope crude oil (ANS) was investigated in the eggs and larvae of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) with and without the chemical dispersant Corexit 9527. Oil alone was acutely toxic to larvae at aqueous concentrations below 50 microg/L total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (tPAH), and median lethal (LC50s) and effective concentrations (EC50s)...

Toxicity of crude oil chemically dispersed in a wave tank to embryos of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus).

Tests of crude oil toxicity to fish are often chronic, exposing embryos from fertilization to hatch to oil solutions prepared using standard mixing procedures. However, during oil spills, fish are not often exposed for long periods and the dynamic nature of the ocean is not easily replicated in the lab. Our objective was to determine if brief exposures of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) embr...
